Newcastle Students Brace For A-Level Results Day

Thousands of students across Newcastle and the North East are counting down to one of the biggest days of the year as A-Level Results Day arrives next week on Thursday, 13 August.

For many, it will be the moment years of hard work finally pay off. University places will be confirmed, apprenticeships can begin and career plans will move forward. Others may find themselves facing unexpected results, but education experts say there are still plenty of opportunities available through UCAS Clearing and alternative pathways.

Whether you're collecting your results in Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham or elsewhere in the North East, knowing what to expect can make one of the most nerve-racking days of the summer much easier to manage.

Results day starts earlier than many people realise.

Although schools and colleges usually begin handing out results during the morning, universities already receive information before students do under strict embargo rules. Students can log into UCAS Hub from 8am on Thursday, 13 August, to see whether they have been accepted by their firm or insurance choice university.

If everything goes to plan, many students will find their university place has already been confirmed before they even open their results envelope.

For those who narrowly miss their grades, it does not necessarily mean the end of their chosen course. Universities often consider applicants individually, particularly where grades are close to the offer.

Newcastle universities are preparing for Clearing.

Both Newcastle University and Northumbria University traditionally welcome students through UCAS Clearing each summer, with dedicated admissions teams ready to answer calls throughout results day.

Clearing is no longer viewed as a last resort. Many students now use it to switch courses, change universities or even secure places at institutions they had not originally considered.

The North East still faces an education gap.

While thousands of young people across the region celebrate impressive achievements every year, official figures continue to highlight the educational challenges facing the North East.

Government statistics from the 2025 examination series showed that 22.9 percent of A-Level entries in the North East achieved an A or A* grade, compared with 32.1 percent in London. Meanwhile, 74.9 percent of entries in the North East achieved grades A* to C.

Education leaders have repeatedly warned that regional differences in funding, deprivation and opportunity continue to influence educational outcomes despite improvements seen nationally.

For students receiving results this summer, however, individual achievement matters far more than regional averages.

Clearing has become one of the busiest days in higher education.

Many people still believe Clearing is only for students who miss their grades, but that is no longer true.

Students without offers, those who change their minds or applicants who achieve better grades than expected can all use Clearing to explore different universities.

UCAS says Clearing opened in early July and eligible applicants can officially add a Clearing choice on Results Day after receiving their grades.

With universities competing for applicants in many subjects, students often have more options available than they expect.

A few simple preparations can reduce stress.

Teachers and careers advisers recommend preparing before Results Day rather than waiting until the morning itself.

Students should ensure they know their UCAS login details, keep a fully charged phone nearby, write down important university contact numbers and research alternative courses before collecting results.

Having a shortlist of possible universities can save valuable time if Clearing becomes necessary.

Parents also play an important role. Remaining calm and supporting young people regardless of the outcome often helps reduce anxiety during what can feel like an overwhelming day.

Success is measured in more than grades.

Results Day often creates memorable headlines about straight A students heading to Oxford or Cambridge, but thousands of successful careers begin through very different routes.

Many North East students choose degree apprenticeships, higher apprenticeships, local colleges or employment before progressing into university later.

Others discover entirely new opportunities through Clearing that ultimately prove to be a better fit than their original plans.

Whatever appears on the results sheet this August, education professionals continue to emphasise that exam grades represent one stage in a much longer journey rather than a final destination.
