Buying a television has become unnecessarily complicated. Showroom labels are covered in acronyms, most of which are marketing terms describing variations on a small number of underlying technologies.
Strip that away and there are perhaps five decisions that genuinely affect what you see.
Here is what the jargon means.
Panel technology is the biggest single factor.
LED-LCD televisions use a liquid crystal panel lit from behind by LEDs. Because the backlight shines through the panel, perfect black is impossible, and dark scenes can look grey.
QLED is an LED-LCD with a quantum dot layer improving colour brightness and volume. It is still an LCD with a backlight, despite the name's similarity to OLED.
Mini-LED is an LED-LCD with a far greater number of much smaller backlight LEDs, divided into many dimming zones. This substantially improves contrast and reduces the halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds, and it gets very bright.
OLED panels have no backlight at all. Each pixel emits its own light and can switch off entirely, producing true black and outstanding contrast. Modern variants including QD-OLED and brightness-boosted panels have addressed the historic weakness of lower peak brightness.
In simple terms: OLED for dark rooms and film watching, Mini-LED for bright rooms and daytime viewing.
Resolution matters less than you think.
4K is standard across almost all sizes now. 8K exists, costs considerably more and has essentially no native content, which makes it difficult to justify at present.
What matters more is upscaling quality, since most of what you watch — broadcast television, streaming at variable bitrates, older content — is not native 4K. A good processor handling lower-resolution sources well is more valuable than more pixels.
HDR is where the real difference lies.
High dynamic range increases the range between darkest and brightest parts of an image, and it makes a bigger visible difference than moving from 1080p to 4K.
HDR10 is the baseline standard supported everywhere. HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are dynamic formats adjusting scene by scene, and they generally look better. HLG is the broadcast format used by UK broadcasters.
Support varies by manufacturer, and no single television supports every format. Check which your preferred streaming services and any physical media use.
Crucially, HDR requires brightness to work. A cheap television claiming HDR support without the brightness to deliver it produces no real benefit.
Refresh rate matters for sport and gaming.
A 120Hz panel handles fast motion better than 60Hz, which is relevant for football and for gaming.
For gaming specifically, look for HDMI 2.1 ports supporting variable refresh rate, auto low latency mode and 4K at 120Hz. Check how many HDMI 2.1 ports there are, since some televisions provide only one or two, and one may be shared with the eARC output for a soundbar.
Input lag figures matter for gaming and are published by review sites, though rarely by manufacturers.
The operating system shapes daily use.
You will interact with the interface every day, and they differ considerably.
The main platforms are Samsung's Tizen, LG's webOS, Google TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku, with some manufacturers using their own.
Consider which apps you need, how cluttered the home screen is with advertising, and how quickly the manufacturer has historically added new services. If the built-in system disappoints, a streaming stick costs relatively little and replaces it.
Sound is almost always the weak point.
Thin televisions have no room for decent speakers, and built-in audio on even expensive sets is generally poor.
A soundbar makes a greater difference to perceived quality than upgrading the panel a tier. Budget for one rather than treating it as optional.
If connecting a soundbar, check the television has an eARC-capable HDMI port, which passes higher quality audio formats.
Size and placement.
The most common mistake is buying too small. For 4K content, sitting closer relative to screen size is fine, and most people underestimate what suits their room.
Measure the viewing distance and the available wall or unit space before shopping. Also measure doorways and staircases, particularly in Newcastle's older terraced and flatted properties where getting a 65-inch box up a narrow stair is a genuine consideration.
Consider window position. A room with large windows facing the screen needs a brighter panel, which points towards Mini-LED rather than OLED.
Buying advice.
Television prices fall substantially through a model year. Buying last year's flagship generally beats this year's mid-range at the same price.
Sales periods around Black Friday and January consistently produce the lowest prices, and the Metrocentre, Silverlink and city centre retailers all price-match major online sellers in many cases.
Seeing a television in a showroom is of limited use, since demonstration modes are set to maximum brightness and saturation. Once home, switch to Filmmaker Mode or Cinema mode, which disables motion smoothing and gives an accurate picture.
Motion smoothing, the setting that makes films look like video, is on by default on most sets and is the single change most worth making.
