Northumberland alone offers more than 30 miles of beaches, while its wider coastal walking route covers approximately 100km. Dogs are permitted on most Northumberland beaches throughout the year, making the county particularly appealing for owners planning a day out with their pets.
There are restrictions to know about, however. Some popular beaches in North Tyneside operate seasonal dog exclusion areas from 1 May until 30 September, so checking the signs before heading onto the sand is essential.
Here are seven dog-friendly beaches near Newcastle and across the North East worth putting on your list.
1. Tynemouth Longsands.
Tynemouth Longsands is one of the best-known beaches close to Newcastle, offering a huge sweep of sand that gives energetic dogs plenty of room for a proper coastal walk.
Dog owners need to pay attention during the summer. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are excluded from the southern section of Longsands. The northern end towards Cullercoats remains available for dog walking, giving owners an alternative without having to abandon a trip to Tynemouth completely.
Outside the seasonal restriction period, the beach becomes an even stronger option for dog owners wanting a long walk close to the city.
2. Whitley Bay.
Whitley Bay combines a traditional seaside atmosphere with an extensive stretch of coastline, making it another convenient choice for Newcastle dog owners.
Like Longsands, there are seasonal restrictions. Dogs are excluded from the southern section of Whitley Bay beach between 1 May and 30 September, but they can still be walked on the section north of Panama Gardens.
That makes checking exactly where you enter the beach worthwhile during summer. Outside the restriction period, owners have considerably more freedom to explore the shoreline with their dogs.
3. Seaton Sluice.
Head slightly further north and the coastline begins to feel noticeably quieter. Seaton Sluice is a popular option for coastal walking, with the surrounding shoreline providing a scenic alternative to the busier resorts of Tynemouth and Whitley Bay.
Its position between North Tyneside and Northumberland also makes it useful for owners looking to turn a simple beach walk into a longer coastal outing. The combination of sand, sea views and nearby walking routes means there is plenty to explore beyond simply throwing a ball on the beach.
4. Druridge Bay.
For dogs that seem to have unlimited energy, Druridge Bay is difficult to beat. The Northumberland beach is famous for its vast, open character and long stretch of sand, giving walkers considerably more space than they might find at smaller urban beaches.
The surrounding area is also popular with walkers and nature lovers, so responsible dog control is important, particularly around wildlife and livestock.
For Newcastle residents prepared to travel further up the coast, Druridge Bay offers the sort of expansive seaside walk that can easily become a full day out.
5. Bamburgh Beach.
Bamburgh requires a longer journey from Newcastle, but the reward is one of the North East's most recognisable coastal landscapes.
The enormous sandy beach sits beneath Bamburgh Castle and provides plenty of room for walking. Visit Northumberland states that dogs are allowed on most of the county's beaches throughout the year, helping make this part of the coast especially attractive to pet-owning visitors.
Bamburgh has also become one of Britain's standout staycation destinations. A 2026 staycation index reported by national media placed Bamburgh second among the UK's top 50 destinations, highlighting the continuing popularity of the Northumberland coast.
6. Beadnell Bay.
Beadnell Bay is another strong option for owners prepared to venture north from Newcastle. Its broad sandy shoreline and Northumberland setting make it particularly appealing for longer walks and quieter days beside the sea.
As with any Northumberland coastal location, dogs should be kept under close control around wildlife. Owners should also pay attention to local signage and any temporary restrictions before setting off.
Combining Beadnell with other nearby coastal destinations can make the longer drive from Newcastle worthwhile.
7. Alnmouth Beach.
Alnmouth provides a different atmosphere again, combining a sweeping sandy beach with one of Northumberland's best-known coastal villages.
It is an attractive choice for owners who want more than a quick walk, as a visit can combine time on the sand with exploring the surrounding area. Its Northumberland location also makes Alnmouth a useful stopping point for people planning a wider dog-friendly trip along the coast.
Owners should remain considerate of wildlife, other beach users and any restrictions shown locally.
Beach safety matters for dogs too.
Allowing a dog to charge towards the sea might look harmless, but coastal conditions can change quickly. The RNLI reported rescuing 164 dogs from around the UK coastline during 2022, illustrating why owners should treat the sea with caution.
The charity advises keeping dogs on leads close to cliff edges and fast-flowing water. Crucially, owners should not enter the water themselves if a dog gets into difficulty. In a coastal emergency, the advice is to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
Dogs should also have fresh drinking water available on warmer days, while paws and coats can be rinsed with tap water after swimming to remove potentially irritating salt and sand.
With around a third of UK households estimated to own a dog, demand for places where pets can join a family day out is unlikely to disappear. Newcastle's location gives owners an enviable choice, from the beaches of North Tyneside to more than 30 miles of spectacular Northumberland sands.
