Election Day 2026: Strong Turnout Expected as Independent Candidates Gain Momentum
Polling stations across Newcastle and the wider North East have opened as voters head to the ballot box in one of the biggest rounds of elections since the 2024 general election.

Across England, almost 25,000 candidates are contesting more than 5,000 council seats in 136 local authorities, with key races taking place in major cities and regions including Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland and North Tyneside.

Voters in Newcastle are expected to play a significant role in shaping the political direction of the region, with local issues such as transport, housing, investment, public services and regeneration dominating the campaign. Political analysts are also predicting a strong turnout for local independent candidates across Newcastle, reflecting growing public interest in community-focused campaigns and candidates operating outside the traditional party system.

Turnout across the North East will be closely watched by political parties looking for signs of changing voter sentiment following last year’s general election, with independents expected to attract support from voters seeking change at a local level.

Alongside the English local elections, Scotland is voting for all 129 seats at Holyrood, while voters in Wales are electing 96 members of the Senedd.

Polling stations opened early this morning and will remain open until 10pm tonight. Unlike a general election, however, counting will take place at different times across the country, meaning results are expected to emerge gradually rather than all at once.

Some authorities in the North East are expected to begin overnight counts, with the first declarations likely to come shortly after 1am on Friday. Newcastle’s results, along with those from neighbouring councils, are expected to provide an early indication of how the political landscape in the region may be shifting.
